Scholarships and Endowments

Privately-Funded Scholarships

Scholarships provide security and encouragement for students, and can be need- or merit-based. The Office of Advancement will be pleased to work with you in establishing a scholarship gift agreement that honors your commitment and addresses the needs of UNCP students.  This scholarship worksheet provides a framework for the gift agreement.  There are two types of scholarships at UNCP:

  • Endowed Scholarship: This is a permanent scholarship that is funded by the interest earned on funds given by a donor.  The principal (accumulated amount given by the donor), must reach the minimum endowment level of $25,000.00 within five years of the initial gift.  Once the minimum is met and interest has been earned on the principal for at least one year, the scholarship can be awarded. Investments are reviewed as of December 31 of each calendar year to determine if the scholarship can be awarded and the award percentage.
  • Annual Scholarship: This is a scholarship that funded directly by donor contributions. The fund is viable only as long as the donor continues to make annual contributions.  Annual scholarships can be awarded in the academic semester immediately following the first contribution.

Endowments

Endowments at UNCP can fund scholarships, professorships, and other programs of your choosing.  Endowments provide funding in perpetuity, creating a secure foundation for long-term initiatives.  The principal of the fund (accumulated amount given by the donor), must reach the minimum endowment level ($25,000 for scholarships and programs, $250,000 for professorships) within five years of the initial gift.  Once the minimum is met and interest has been earned on the principal for at least one year, the earnings can be disbursed.

Endowment funds are reviewed by the UNCP Joint Investment Committee on an annual basis.  The JIC reviews the university's investment portfolio and determines the spending allowance for the following academic year.  The spending allowance is a percentage of the average market value over three years, always ensuring the principal is kept intact.
