“Shanghai Nights”

The Shanghai Acrobats of the People’s Republic of China debut their brand new program “Shanghai Nights!” This show features more than one hundred of China’s top acrobats, blending breath-taking excitement with beautiful elegance. The stories presented will be told through the beauty of movement, music and color, each highlighting the wonderfully diverse nature of Shanghai.

The Purple Xperience has been bringing the memories of Prince and The Revolution to audiences of all generations.

Annie, the musical

Leapin' lizards! The world’s best-loved musical returns to Givens in time-honored form. Directed by original lyricist and director Martin Charnin and choreographed by Liza Gennaro, this production of ANNIE will be a brand new incarnation of the iconic original. Featuring book and score by Tony Award®-winners Thomas Meehan, Charles Strouse and Martin Charnin, ANNIE includes such unforgettable songs as “It’s the Hard Knock Life,” “Easy Street,” “I Don’t Need Anything But You,” plus the eternal anthem of optimism, “Tomorrow.”

Holiday

8th Annual Holiday Extravaganza

Friday, December 2, 8 p.m.

Celebrate the holidays with a musical extravaganza that puts the talents of the many UNCP performing groups, students and faculty on full display. Virtually all of the university’s ensembles and choirs will gather to perform uplifting renditions of holiday favorites. This family-friendly event also features a fun sing-along of well-known Christmas carols. Come early and catch the “Tuba Christmas” mini-concert at 7:30 p.m. in front of GPAC. Proceeds from this concert will go to support music scholarships.

Tap Ensemble

N.C. Youth Tap Ensemble

Rhythm…funk…innovation…excitement: that’s the North Carolina Youth Tap Ensemble. One of the best youth tap ensembles in the world, NCYTE features approximately 40 dancers, ages 8 to 18, who hail from throughout North Carolina. Don’t let the word “youth” fool you. These dancers tear up the floor with poise, passion and professionalism. NCYTE honors the traditions of this unique American form while infusing it with youthful energy, contemporary music, and innovative dances from some of the world’s most talented choreographers.

42nd Street 

42nd Street

Thursday, January 26, 7:30 p.m.

42nd Street is the song and dance fable of Broadway, with an American Dream story and some of the greatest songs ever written, including “We’re In The Money,” “Lullaby of Broadway,” “Shuffle Off To Buffalo,” “Dames,” “I Only Have Eyes For You” and of course “42nd Street.”

With book by Michael Stewart and Mark Bramble, music by Harry Warren and lyrics by Al Dubin, 42nd Street is based on a novel by Bradford Ropes and Busby Berkeley’s 1933 movie and tells the story of a starry-eyed young dancer named Peggy Sawyer who leaves her Allentown home and comes to New York to audition for the new Broadway musical Pretty Lady. When the leading lady breaks her ankle, Peggy takes over and becomes a star.

Stomp

STOMP

Tuesday, March 21, 7:30 p.m.

STOMP is explosive, provocative, sophisticated, sexy, utterly unique and appeals to audiences of all ages. The international percussion sensation has garnered an armful of awards and rave reviews, and has appeared on numerous national television shows. The eight-member troupe uses everything but conventional percussion instruments – matchboxes, wooden poles, brooms, garbage cans, Zippo lighters, hubcaps – to fill the stage with magnificent rhythms. 

The return of the percussive hit also brings some new surprises, with some sections of the show now updated and restructured and the addition of two new full-scale routines, utilizing props like tractor tire inner tubes and paint cans. As USA Today says, “STOMP finds beautiful noises in the strangest places.” STOMP. See what all the noise is about.

Swan Lake

The Russian National Ballet Theatre presents Swan Lake

Monday, March 27, 7:30 p.m.

Presenting the 50-member Russian National Ballet Theatre in the full-length ballet Swan Lake. This classic production debuted in 1877 and is often called the “national ballet of Russia.” It tells the story of Odette, a princess turned into a swan by an evil sorcerer’s curse.

Pippin is Broadway’s high-flying, death-defying hit musical full of extraordinary acrobatics, wondrous magical feats and soaring songs that follow one young man’s journey extraordinary. This unforgettable new production is the winner of four 2013 Tony Awards® including Best Musical Revival.
