The Applied Gerontology Minor was established in 1986 to meet the needs of a wide range of UNC Pembroke students who have an academic and/or personal interest in the aging process. Students who have completed the minor include those with majors in Biology, Criminal Justice, Health Promotion, Physical Education, Nursing, Political Science, Psychology, Recreation, Social Work and Sociology.

All students who wish to graduate with the minor must complete an internship consistent with their respective major. The internship is a cooperative arrangement between the Coordinator the Applied Gerontology Minor and the chair of the student's department. Some departments do not offer internships. For those students, a special arrangement is made. In order to graduate with the Applied Gerontology Minor, all students are required to have a professional experience with an elderly population.

The Applied Gerontology Minor is a member of the Southeastern Gerontology Consortium which includes UNC Wilmington, Fayetteville State University and UNC Pembroke. In addition, we are a member of the North Carolina Gerontology Consortium UNC Institute on Aging.
