NEED-BASED FINANCIAL AID TERMS

Federal Subsidized Stafford Loans - These are available to all students enrolled in a degree program who are U.S. citizens or eligible non-citizens. The maximum loan amounts are $3,500 for freshmen, $4,500 for sophomores, $5,500 for juniors and seniors, and $8,500 for graduate students. (Independent students are eligible for additional amounts.) About 3,000 UNC Pembroke students receive federal loans.

Federal Pell Grants - These are available to all undergraduate students who meet the federal government's eligibility formula. Pell Grants range from $400 to $4,310 for the year, and about 75% of UNC Pembroke students on aid receive Pell Grants.

Other Grants - UNC Pembroke participates in the Federal Supplemental Grant and the State Appropriated Grant programs. In addition, NC residents who complete the FAFSA are automatically considered for the NC Student Incentive Grant and the UNC Need-Based Grants. The latter two grants are administered by the College Foundation, Inc., in Raleigh. Eligibility is based on information that agency receives from the federal government when a student submits the FAFSA. No additional application is needed.

Federal Perkins Loans - This program provides several thousand dollars each year to needy UNC Pembroke students.

Federal Work Study – This is a campus job program that provides money to needy students. Eligible students who work in the program are paid once a month by check. The amount of these resources is limited and the money is usually given to students who apply early.
