Department of English and Theatre

What can a person do with an English major?  Just ask Tyrone McClean, a freshman from Williamston, North Carolina.  He plans to attend law school after graduation and become a corporate lawyer. 

Tyrone has already gotten a view of law from a different perspective.  Over the summer, he worked as a congressional intern for G.K. Butterfield, who represents the 1^st District of North Carolina in the U.S. House of Representatives.  Tyrone worked in one of Rep. Butterfield’s district offices in North Carolina.  The experience, he says, gave him a behind-the-scenes look at politics.

Tyrone says he was “extremely attracted” to UNCP, particularly because of the small class sizes.  Once he got to campus, he had a great experience in Dr. Jane Haladay’s composition class.  Perhaps it’s no wonder, since Tyrone says he has a “passion for English,” especially for grammar.  He also enjoys music.  A pianist and vocalist, he is considering a second major in music.
