Dr. Monika Brown

My parents came to America from Berlin, Germany, and I grew up in Chapel Hill, Blacksburg VA, and suburban New York. My B.A. in English and French is from the University of Georgia. My Ph.D. in English, with specialization in Victorian literature and a comparative literature minor, is from Duke University. My family, the Bargmanns, exposed me to many areas of study. My father was a statistician/computer scientist and amateur pianist, and my mother taught history and art. My sisters are a physician at the University of Virginia, a neuroscientist at Rockefeller University in New York, and a public defender investigator and writer in Austin.

Since joining the UNC Pembroke faculty in 1982, I have taught British literature, world literature, honors humanities, composition, and English education, with advanced and graduate courses such as The British Novel, Victorian Literature, Adaptations in Music and Film, and The Teaching of Writing. Each year I teach an online world literature course. I received two UNC Pembroke Outstanding Teaching Awards.

The subjects of my published articles include British novelists George Eliot and Joseph Conrad, film adaptations of novels, and the teaching of Madame Bovary and The Turn of the Screw. I give conference presentations on topics in British literature, 19th-century European culture, film adaptation, and teaching composition and literature. The Modern Language Association's 2009 book on Teaching World Literature includes an article about my UNCP courses, with quotations from student essays. My current research, featured in the Fall 2009 ET Beacon, examines adaptations of Goethe's Faust play in French art and music of the Romantic era.

My passions include teaching, working with students and teachers, traveling in the US and Europe, attending concerts and visiting museums, watching films and simulcast operas in the Sunrise Theater in Southern Pines, and singing choral music in the choir of Emmanuel Episcopal Church.

My husband, Dr. Robert W. Brown, is Chair of the History Department at UNC Pembroke. We live in Southern Pines with our daughter Sarah, an eleventh grader whose world centers around horses, riding, reading, and writing.
