Mr. David Underwood

David UnderwoodDavid Underwood is the Set and Lighting Designer for the Theatre Program at UNCP. He has worked in theatre for over 28 years, starting as a “Hairy Ishmaelite” for a production of Joseph and His Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat when he was in sixth grade. He worked his way up as “Big Julie” in Guys and Dolls, “Ali Hackim” in Oklahoma and the lead in Little Mary Sunshine, “Captain Warington.” He also worked backstage learning lighting. Once he got to Swarthmore College, he focused on theatre technology, especially lighting. While in college he worked on and designed a number of productions, including Chess and The Emperor Jones. He graduated with a special major in Theatre Education. After wandering the real world for two years (working as a Kelly Girl), David found himself working 40 hours a week in a cubicle and doing 40 a week at night of amateur theatre. He then decided if he was going to work 80 hours a week, it might as well all be theatre and he might as well get paid for it. He then went to UNC Chapel Hill to get his MFA in Technical Production. When David graduated he came to UNCP as the Technical Director. Since then he has been the Production Manager for GPAC and is now Designer for the Theatre program. David is married to Tanya Underwood and has one daughter, Maggie.
