The coordinator of UNCP’s Theatre Program, Chet Jordan teaches courses in directing, as well as parliamentary procedure and small group discussion. In recent years, he has directed student productions of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Crimes of the Heart, and several other plays. He has taught at UNCP since 1979.
“I enjoy the structure and organization of discussions and the creativity of discovery in problem solving and decision making,” Dr. Jordan explains. “Surprisingly, these are closely associated with theatre which is organized within a time frame and seeks the creativity of all involved.”
He doesn’t limit his teaching to the classroom, however. In fact, he finds directing a particularly satisfying form of teaching, “not only because students vie to be in a production, but also because they learn so much without realizing what they are gaining.”
Dr. Jordan comes from the home of the American theatre, New York City, where he still likes to catch a show from time to time. He also likes to see plays in Las Vegas, explore 19th-century opera houses, and chase and ride steam trains.
