Three students from the Department of English and Theatre won prizes at the 2012 Pembroke Undergraduate Reasearch and Creativity Symposium:

  • 1st Place in Oral Presentations: Tank Steiner, "Rethinking ESL Tutoring Strategies: Lessons from Germany" (Faculty Advisor: Teagan Decker)
  • 1st Place in Humanities and Mass Communication: Amelia Philbrook, "'The Sin Eaters' and 'The Shawl' as test cases for Apocalyptic Holocaust Literature" (Faculty Advisor: Michele Fazio)
  • Honorable Mention in Humanities and Mass Communication: Patricia S. Taylor and Kaitlyn West, "The Effect of Intensive Standard English Grammar Instruction on Reading and Writing Skills" (Faculty Advisor: Sara Oswald)

UNCP student publications took several awards in the 2011 contest of the North Carolina College Media Association. The awards were made at the annual conference, Feb. 18, 2012, at Winston-Salem State University. Specific awards:
  • The Aurochs--4 individual awards:
    • Rachel Young, First Place, Nonfiction for "Blind Dates"
    • Jake Bayog, Third Place, Poetry, for "My Bernadette"
    • Sarah Linn Frohlich, Second Place, Photography/Art for "Lizard"
    • Chris P. Fisher, Third Place, Photography/Art for "Arab Dhow on a Stormy Sea"

  • Indianhead yearbook took Best of Show (2nd place overall, behind NC State's Agromeck) plus 5 individual awards:
    • Janna Blue, Third Place for Copy
    • Janna Blue, Honorable Mention for Spread Design
    • Joel Beachum, Third Place for Photography
    • Maria Hockaday, Honorable Mention for Student Life Copy
    • Emily Kline, Honorable Mention for Sports Copy

Both publications are advised by faculty in the English and Theatre department. Congratulations to Karen Helgeson, advisor of The Aurochs, and Sara Oswald, advisor of Indianhead, for their work with these students.

Shelby Stephenson retired this year after many years of service to UNCP as a professor and as editor of Pembroke Magazine. Sara Oswald's scrapbook (PDF, 6 MB) commemorates his time at Pembroke and photos from his retirement reception in October.
