meet a major
Robert Garner
It has always been my dream to pursue a career in law, particularly environmental and criminal litigation, and I found the English program at UNCP to be the perfect foundation for my aspirations.
As an English major, I learned how to construct a case, how to lay premiseand arguments in such an air-tight fashion that effectively communicates my message or point. I learned how to read, not just at face value, but how to dig deeply into all sorts of texts and how to interpret underlying themes that may not be expressly written on the page. I learned and experienced the value of a curriculum that allows for a diverse education through exposure to relevant and poignant issues that have left significant marks on our 21st century world like Guantanamo Bay and linguistic imperialism.
There has been no more significant contribution to my life, education, and career, however, than the dedication and commitment of my professors within the Department of English and Theatre. Each of them genuinely cared for my well-being and success as a writer, as a student, and as a person. They challenged my convictions and inspired me to think in new ways. They pushed me to what I thought was my intellectual limit and showed me that I was capable of even more than I had imagined.
It is because of this intense culture of learning and these dedicated and accomplished faculty that I embark on the next chapter of my journey with a generous scholarship at the Elon University School of Law. Because of the preparation I received at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke, I am confident in a bright future with a broad vision for a better tomorrow.
