ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROGRAMS

English as a Second Language (ESL)

The ELI offers a number of classes designed to develop English proficiency and prepare international students for the rigors of academic life in the United States.

  • Composition focuses on critical thinking, grammatical concepts, and essay writing for an academic audience.
  • Reading Comprehension prepares students for the rigors of university-level reading and vocabulary.
  • Listening Comprehension stresses note taking techniques and vocabulary building through lectures related to contemporary issues, American studies, and academic disciplines.
  • Oral Communication enhances language fluency by focusing on oral expression and correct pronunciation. Presentation skills are introduced and practiced.  American slang and idioms are also discussed.
  • Cultural Practicum provides students an opportunity to explore non-traditional avenues of second language learning through participation in University-sponsored organizations, events, and field trips.
  • PBT® Preparation guides students through each of the three paper-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (PBT®) sections.  Speed, accuracy, and test taking techniques are emphasized.
  • iBT® Preparation guides students through each of the four Internet-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (iBT®) sections.  Speed, accuracy, and test taking techniques are emphasized.

English for a Special Purpose (ESP)

English for a Special Purpose (ESP) courses are designed to present visiting students with the opportunity to expand their horizons, to examine and understand the fullness of the world around them, and to investigate unique aspects of the United States and the UNCP region, while also giving them the critical and reflective skills needed to succeed in a globalized economy.

While the examples here reflect popular offerings, courses may be specifically created to meet the needs of almost any group.  Site visits are an integral part of the coursework.

English for Nursing. This course introduces the language employed for nursing in America through visits to modern medical facilities, CPR and First Aid certification, nursing assessment seminars, and lectures.

English for Government.  An introductory study of the language used to describe: (1) the basic concepts and principles of the U.S. Constitution, (2) the structure, functions of and the relations between the legislative, executive and judicial branches of the national government, and (3) the relations between the national and state governments.

English for Business. This course examines English in the world of U.S. business and marketing, and discusses the responsibilities of business as part of American society, while emphasizing the importance of international business and marketing.
