English as a Second Language (ESL)

International students without a passing TOEFL score and proof of English language proficiency can enroll in the University of North Carolina at Pembroke's ESL program during either the fall or spring semester. Once a student has successfully completed the ESL program, he/she will matriculate as a full time student at UNC-Pembroke.

The English Language Institute offers a number of classes designed to develop English proficiency and prepare international students for the rigors of academic life in the United States. 

• Writing and Composition focuses on developing the skills for academic writing and provides students with a range of strategies to prepare them for future assignments in their undergraduate college and university courses. 
• Reading Comprehension prepares students for university-level reading and vocabulary by developing reading speed and comprehension and improving the range of vocabulary through critical reading, analysis, and note-taking.
• Listening Comprehension employs various forms of media, such as academic lectures, discussions, speeches, modern films and video clips to enhance note-taking techniques and increase aural proficiency.  
• Oral Communication builds language fluency and accuracy by focusing on oral expression and skillful pronunciation. Focus is placed upon developing the ability to debate, manage conversations, give instructions, and present opinions in English.
• Cultural Practicum provides students an opportunity to explore non-traditional avenues of second language learning through participation in University-sponsored organizations, events, and field trips.
• Culture Studies increases student comprehension of both American academic and non-academic culture through lecture and discussion.
• TOEFL Preparation guides students through each of the Internet-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (iBT®) sections. Speed, accuracy, and test taking techniques are emphasized.

English for Specific Purposes (ESP)

ESP courses are designed to provide opportunities to expand horizons, objectively examine and better understand the world, and investigate unique aspects of the United States and the local region, while also fostering the critical and reflective skills needed to succeed in a globalized economy.

While the examples here reflect the most popular offerings, courses may be specifically created to meet the needs of individual groups, such as Business English, Legal English, English for Medical Professionals, or Training for Teachers of English as a Foreign Language.
