The English Language Institute (ELI)

The mission of the English Language Institute is to provide an excellent education in its English as a Second Language Program (ESL) by a qualified and dedicated staff, promoting an educated and diversified student body that contributes positively to the campus and local community and who communicate effectively as a result of an enriching educational journey.  To this end, international students build lasting friendships from around the world where communication and the free exchange of ideas is both productive and amicable as a byproduct of a common form of discourse.

The English as a Second Language Program at UNCP offers a comprehensive, student-focused curriculum designed for:

• Students taking ESL only for professional or personal reasons and have no intention on studying academic programs at UNCP within the United States – ESL training and development.
• Students intending to matriculate to undergraduate and/or graduate degrees at UNCP, within the UNC system, or within the United States and are required to have the requisite communication skills and/or TOEFL score for entry into degree programs.
• Students taking ESL coursework as part of a group study abroad experience amid the beautiful and friendly environment of North Carolina (English immersion and the American-North Carolina experience).
• F1 Student Visa status students or J1 Student Exchange status students who are lawfully permitted under immigration guidelines by their home country’s Embassy and/or Consulate Office and have been accepted by UNCP ESL program to undertake English as a Second Language
• Students seeking to prepare for the TOEFL examination.
