Client Services Bits and Bytes for Spring 2011
Blackboard online support: Cassie Manis, Client Services’ Help Desk Technician, and Dr. Timothy Hayes, Sociology and Criminal Justice Department, have created a Blackboard webpage to assist our users with how-to guides and videos, with answers to frequently asked questions, and information regarding known Blackboard issues. The webpage is available from the DoIT website at www.uncp.edu/blackboard/.
Clicker Response System Pilot: Three hundred TurningTechnologies clicker response systems were distributed in a pilot study among a number of academic departments (including Art, History, HPER, Math/Computer Science, Music, Philosophy/Religion and Political Science) in November to determine how using the devices in courses would enhance the teaching and learning process. Each department will incorporate the clickers in one or more of their courses and will report to DoIT their findings after spring break. Due to the high interest across campus, 250 additional clickers have been ordered in an attempt to fill the needs of a waiting list. More information will be communicated when results from the pilot are received and analyzed. Also look for an announcement for future introductory training opportunities.
Mathematica Training: Arrangements are currently being made to have Mathematica trainers on campus for a whole day to provide one-half day of training on how to use Mathematica and the other half for hands-on project work. Interested faculty, staff and students should contact Cindy Saylor at saylor@uncp.edu to find out more about this special opportunity to learn about a new application as well as have one-on-one assistance to accomplish a project in the same day. The all-day training opportunity is limited to 20 individuals.
Virtual Computing Lab update: The DoIT VCL team has updated all the VCL images to include any updates necessary for software and browsers, and has included a few additional applications for use including PASW/SPSS v.19, PhotoShop 9.0, and a Blackboard image for anyone having difficulties with their locally-loaded browsers for Blackboard use. See www.uncp.edu/doit/vcl/ for access to the VCL.
VPN user guides online: For those of you who rely on the VPN (virtual private network) to work from off campus, please note that user guides for different browsers are available from the DoIT website (www.uncp.edu/doit/help/vpn). Browsers covered are Firefox, Google Chrome, Internet Explorer and Safari.
