Keep your identity with you: new security training sessions

Starting on March 22, 2010, DoIT is providing identity theft prevention training sessions in a classroom and online.  As a best practice and using as a guide the Federal Trade Commission's ("FTC") Red Flags Rule, implementing Section 114 of the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act of 2003, UNCP developed and approved an Identity Theft Prevention Policy (CH 01) and Program that goes into effect this summer. The purpose of the program is to detect, prevent and mitigate identity theft in connection with any University covered accounts.

Security training to prevent identity theft is now available in a Blackboard training course in preparation of the summer implementation for the new Identity Theft Policy. Login to Blackboard, click Identity Theft Prevention under My Courses, and then go to Assignments and follow the step-by-step tutorial.

All University offices that use personal identifying information other than directory information must become aware of the new standards for preventing identity theft. DoIT Training Consultant, Melanie Jacobs is also putting the finishing touches to provide in-person training sessions for UNCP faculty and staff. Identity theft prevention is a job duty of every University employee and all employees are held accountable by multiple state and federal standards for knowing and following best practices in preventing identity theft.
