LAN Desk Frequently Asked Questions
Some unusual windows appeared when I logged in. Do I have a virus?
The LAN desk installation process will cause a number of windows to appear soon after you log in. These are DOS windows (black background, white text) and will only be displayed briefly as the installation occurs. Also, until the installation is finished for each person in your group, you will see a single window appear briefly soon after you log in. This is also normal. This does not indicate that you have a virus.
Why do I need the LAN desk client on my computer?
The LAN desk client is required for every laptop and desktop computer that is connected to the UNCP network. This software provides numerous benefits. These benefits are described in the next section..
What benefits will I get from having the LAN desk client on my computer?
It will be much easier for the Help Desk and others from DoIT to respond more quickly to your support requests. Much of what now requires a technician to visit your office can be accomplished remotely. LAN desk will also allow Help Desk personnel to control your computer remotely, with your permission, to assist you. LAN desk will help insure that your computer has the latest updates, making your computer much more reliable.
Will DoIT personnel be able to spy on me?
No, your permission is required to establish remote control of your computer. LAN desk cannot be used to monitor Internet activity, content of your files or your e-mail.
Now each day a "LAN desk" window appears. Is this normal?
Yes, once the LAN desk client is installed on your computer you will see a LAN desk window each day. LAN desk is simply performing tasks such as checking for what updates you need and other maintenance tasks. You can minimize this window and continue working. This maintenance activity is brief, usually lasting no more than 10 minutes.
If I feel the LAN desk client is causing a problem, who can I call?
If you feel you are having problems with your computer related to LAN desk that are outside the scope of what is discussed in this FAQ or the e-mail notification that you received concerning LAN desk, please call the Help Desk at extension 6260.
