On Tuesday, April 4, English Composition faculty came together to participate in an informal “Assignment Swap,” in which participants traded assignment sheets and accompanying rubrics designed for English 1050 and 1060. The event, hosted by the First-Year Writing Committee, provided a forum in which faculty could discuss their varied approaches to teaching first-year writing and reflect on the ways their assignments help students achieve course goals. Conversation was lively, as faculty shared prompts for assignments as varied as synthesis essays, casebooks, and multimodal projects. Dr. Abby Mann, for example, shared an assignment that asked students to engage in real-world research by having them plan an imaginary trip complete with transit, lodging, and dining. Faculty left the workshop with more than assignment sheets. Reflecting on the experience, Dr. Mann noted that “Drs. Vela and Lauzon helped me think about how to have students connect out from their own experiences.” Events like this and last month’s “Back to Basics” meet a growing demand for professional development workshops within the department, and we look forward to even more opportunities for faculty engagement in the coming academic year.
