ETFL Faculty Lead the Way in Service Learning

November 27, 2017

In November 2017, the Community and Civic Engagement office hosted its first North Carolina Service-Learning Coalition Summit. Approximately 100 attendees, representing educators and administrators from pre-K to the University level as well as community organizations and partners, came from all over the state to discuss the promotion of civic engagement through service-learning and share best practices.

Several ETFL faculty members presented session workshops describing the various ways they have incorporated service-learning into their English courses. ETFL professor Dr. Scott Hicks, American Indian Studies professor Dr. Jane Haladay, and Education professor Dr. Laura Staal discussed how they are "Sustaining Community Service-Learning Partnerships at UNC Pembroke.” Each discussed what sustainable service-learning looks like and how to develop and sustain community partnerships in diverse and economically challenged regions. ETFL faculty members Deana Johnson and Amy Williams discussed how they are "Meeting the Needs of First Year College Students Through Service-Learning" through their composition classes. They explored strategies for successful ventures including reading/literacy events, community outreach, and campus engagement.
