Dr. Charles R. Jenkins is the Chancellor of The University of North Carolina at Pembroke on an interim basis, continuing a dedicated tenure with the University that began in 1971.

Jenkins, who became UNC Pembroke’s Chancellor on July 1, 2009, is a Professor Emeritus with the University and has served as a Professor of Educational Leadership since 2000. Prior to teaching full-time with the University, Jenkins served as Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs from 1986 to 2000.

His long and distinguished tenure at UNC Pembroke also includes serving as Academic Dean, 1980-1985; Dean of Academic Affairs for Programs and Faculty Development, 1978-80; Assistant to the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, 1977-78; Director of Student Teaching, 1976-1977; Director of Admissions, 1975-1976, and as a Department of Education faculty member, 1976-77 and 1971-74.

He served as a commissioner for the Commission on Colleges for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and was former president of the N.C. Association of Academic Officers.

A resident of Laurinburg, N.C., he served on the Board of Trustees of Scotland Memorial Hospital and served two years as chair. He was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine by the governor.

The Laurinburg-Scotland Area Chamber of Commerce named Jenkins Volunteer of the Year for his work last summer on its national accreditation. He is a past president of the Pembroke Area Chamber of Commerce.

A native of Rockingham, N.C., Jenkins earned Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts in Education degrees from East Carolina University and his doctorate in education administration from Duke University. He is married to Karen Gibson Jenkins.
