UNC IN WASHINGTON
![]() |
The University of North Carolina Semester in Washington Program is an exciting new internship program for excellent students from the constituent universities in the University of North Carolina system. Seniors, juniors, and mature sophomores work and study in Washington, DC while earning 12 hours of academic credit. Offered every fall, spring, and summer, students intern at such organizations such as the U.S. Congress, the U.S. executive branch, think tanks, interest groups, and private companies that fit their academic and career interests.
The benefits of the UNC Semester in Washington program include an internship with a Washington, DC public-sector or private sector organization; 12 hours of academic credit for the internship, a Washington Experience course, and an additional distance education course or independent study; an experienced administrative director based in Washington who serves as mentor and helps you arrange your internship; a faculty-in-residence from the UNC system who teaches the Washington Experience course; and housing on Capitol Hill with wireless computing, kitchenettes, a classroom, and an exercise room.
The students who participate in the UNC in Washington program will live and work in Washington, D.C. In addition to its magnificent federal structures and national monuments, Washington is a lively cultural center with a rich mix of art, music and theatre. Washington's dynamic professional environment and vibrant multicultural atmosphere offer students a vast array of opportunities to expand their career, academic, and personal goals.
UNC in Washington provides student housing and a faculty member in residence. A three-credit seminar, called “The Washington Experience,” and three-credit independent study are coupled with a six-credit internship. A summer session is also available.
Internships may be selected from a broad array of choices, including the White House, Congressional offices, political parties, think tanks, media, law, interest groups (lobbies), public relations, and museums (including the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian).
Students pay UNCP's regular (full-time) tuition and fees and estimated expenses of $3,000 for housing, $950 for food, $500 for transportation in Washington, $300 for books and $950 in other personal expenses. The program meets the requirements for financial aid.
For more information contact the UNC in Washington Program Campus Coordinator, Dr. Charles Tita, at 910.521.6352 or at charles.tita@uncp.edu.
