The mission of the Art Department is two fold: Contribute a necessary and integral component to the mission of the University by providing opportunities for broad artistic and intellectual development of the University body; and specifically nurture and support the quality education of those who have chosen fine arts as a professional goal either as producing artists or as teachers.

The faculty is committed to excellence in teaching, research, and service to the university and the community, and strives to provide a learning environment which nurtures not only the artistic spirit but the spirit and professionalism of the prospective art teacher as well.  The studio-oriented program leads to study at the graduate level or professional employment. The Art Education program leads to teacher licensure in grades K-12.  The department strives to provide the faculty with the opportunities, resources, and rewards to achieve excellence in their respective disciplines.

Before graduating from either program, a senior is required to present an acceptable exhibition of his or her work from his or her area of concentration.

BACHELOR OF ARTS IN ART EDUCATION (K-12)

 Upon successful completion of the program of study in Art Education and related requirements, graduates are eligible for an “A” license to teach in the State of North Carolina.  For a more detailed description, including the program standards and goals and objectives, turn to Undergraduate Licensure Programs in the School of Education section of this catalog.

       

 

NOTE:  Students who desire teacher licensure in Art Education should declare the major as soon as possible in their college career. Consultation with the Program Coordinator or program advisor prior to registering for General Education courses is strongly recommended.                         

 

 

ACADEMIC CONCENTRATION:

Requirements for an Academic Concentration in Art

For students seeking a baccalaureate degree in Elementary Education, Special Education, or Physical Education, the Art Department offers an Academic Concentration of eighteen hours. This Academic Concentration is available to other students, regardless of major.

     

 

MINORS:  

Requirements for a Minor in Art

The Minor in Art is designed to offer a fundamental background in Art for the non-Art major.  Eighteen semester hours are required.

 

Requirements for a Minor in Art History

The Art History minor allows students to augment any major with courses that analyze the history, theory, and criticism of world visual culture.  Eighteen semester hours are required.

Requirements for a Minor in Media Integration Studies

Media Integration Studies is an opportunity for interdisciplinary study in digital studios within three academic departments: Art, Mass Communications, and Music.

ART 1010.  Elements of Design

A study and application of design principles in creative two‑dimensional projects in line, value, color and texture.  Credit, 3 semester hours.

ART 1020.  Three‑Dimensional Design

A study and application of design principles in creative three‑dimensional projects in mass and space using various materials.  Credit, 3 semester hours.

ART 1050.  Introduction to Sculpture

A survey course aimed at studying the problems of mass and space in sculpture. Various materials and sculptural techniques will be explored.  Credit, 3 semester hours.

ART 1110.  Ceramics: Introduction to Handbuilding

This course will cover handbuilding techniques and surface treatments.  The student will study historical and contemporary uses of ceramics in the art world with a focus on hand-built ceramics. Basic glazing and firing techniques will also be introduced.  Credit, 3 semester hours.

ART 1120.  Ceramics: Introduction to the Wheel

This course will cover beginning-level use of the pottery wheel.  The student will study historical and contemporary uses of ceramics in the art world with a focus on wheel-thrown forms in ceramics. Basic glazing and firing techniques will also be introduced.  Credit, 3 semester hours.

ART 1320.  Introduction to Drawing

A course designed to acquaint the student with the basic principles of media and terminology of drawing.  Credit, 3 semester hours.

ART 1330.  Introduction to Painting

An introduction to color, structure, and pictorial organization. Various techniques and group criticism will be implemented.  Credit, 3 semester hours.

ART 1400.  Introduction to Printmaking

A course offering the basic techniques and procedures in printmaking. Studio projects include problems in intaglio, wood cuts, wood engravings, and the collograph.  Credit, 3 semester hours.

ART 2020.  Digital Arts Appreciation

ART 2020 is an opportunity, for non-Art majors, for introductory study and activity in various contemporary means of visual communication and design thinking practiced through digital means. The DAA 2020 curriculum is focused both on digital literacy and on design thinking. As such students will find both computers and working creatively with computers and related technologies co-equal foci of this course. DAA 2020 is open to all students and has no prerequisites.  Credit, 3 semester hours.

ART 2050.  Art Appreciation

A course designed to establish an understanding of art, to develop an appreciation for the relation between art and man, and to study the cultural and historical contexts of artistic production and reception.  Credit, 3 semester hrs.

ART 2080.  Survey of Art I: Ancient through Medieval

An overview of painting, sculpture, architecture, and related visual arts of major world cultures from prehistoric times to around 1400 A.D., including European, American, Asian, African, and Islamic art. Major artistic developments and their cultural contexts will be emphasized. Credit, 3 semester hours.

ART 2090.  Survey of Art II: Renaissance through Contemporary

An overview of painting, sculpture, architecture, and related visual arts of major world cultures from the Renaissance to the present, including European, American, Asian, African, and Islamic art. Major artistic developments and their cultural contexts will be emphasized. Credit, 3 semester hours.

ART 2120.  Watercolor

An exploration of the basic working methods of traditional transparent watercolor and experimental multi-media techniques. Credit, 3 semester hours.

ART 2150.  Figure Drawing

A course to introduce the student to the figure as an art form. Various techniques will be explored.  Credit, 3 semester hours.

ART 2300.  Digital Arts I

Digital Arts I is an introduction to computing as it pertains to the visual arts and is required of all students majoring in Art at UNCP. As such, this course has been constructed as an overview of, and a structured opportunity for, basic study in computer graphics and digital imaging in the visual arts.   Credit, 3 semester hours. PREREQ: ART 1010, 1320 (for majors) or 2020 (for non-majors).

ART 2320.  Intermediate Drawing

Intermediate study in drawing as complete art form. Further exploration of drawing techniques using drawing assignments and student developed conceptually focused projects which may include experimental approaches.  Credit, 3 semester hours. PREREQ: ART 1320.

ART 2500.  Communication Design

A computer-based introduction to layout, illustration, typography, and general graphic design accomplished for the purposes of advertising art.  Credit, 3 semester hours. PREREQ: ART 1010 (for majors) or 202 (for non-majors).

ART 2510.  Information Graphics Design

A study course involving procedures and technical applications in the graphic design field. Computer graphics is explored as a major information source.  Credit, 3 semester hours. PREREQ: ART 2500 (for majors) or 2020 (for non-majors).

ART 2560. Web Design

Art 2560 Web Design focuses on contemporary methods of webpage and online graphics design. In this course students will work toward an effective understanding and utilization of interfaced-based applications for the construction and development of web-based media. PREREQ: ART 2300 (for majors) or 2020 (for non-majors).  Credit, 3 semester hours.

ART 3000.  Advanced Digital Arts I

ART 3000, Advanced Digital Arts I, is an opportunity for further inquiry into the digital arts in general and the technologies of still and sequenced imagery acquisition, manipulation, and output in particular.  Projects and assignments emphasize an introductory through intermediate levels of difficulty in various aspects of these forms of digital image making and build on concepts introduced in DA 1.  Instruction in the use(s) of both hardware and software is emphasized with a particular focus on digital darkroom tools and techniques, digital video editing and file archiving. In terms of assignments, both individual and small group assignments can be expected. As to time in the studios, optimally, ADA I students should expect to spend additional time in the digital studio beyond that already scheduled for the course.  PREREQ: ART 2300.  Credit, 3 semester hours.

ART 3050.  Art Education in Grades K‑6

This course focuses on the creative abilities of the elementary school child. The course will explore the graphic abilities of the child, the philosophy of sequential learning, and various production techniques and processes appropriate for elementary school. In addition to creating and executing production lesson plans, students will learn to discuss exemplary works of art with the elementary student.  Credit, 3 semester hours.

ART 3060.  Art Education in Grades 7‑12

This course focuses on the creative abilities of students in grades 7 through 12. The course will explore various processes and techniques appropriate for upper level students, different styles of learning (including those of students with special needs), and techniques of classroom maintenance and management.  Credit, 3 semester hours.

ART 3080.  Art Education Field Experience

This course provides the art education major with an early field experience teaching art in a variety of educational settings. The student will develop curricula, unit plans, and lesson plans that respond to the unique features of the learning environment.  Credit, 3 semester hours. PREREQ: ART 3050, 3060, and admission to the Teacher Education Program.

ART 3100.  Non-Western Art

An in-depth examination of the art and architecture of a selected Non-Western cultures to include Native American Arts of North and South America, Asia, Africa.   Credit, 3 semester hours.

ART 3150.  Advanced Sculpture I

A study and application of three‑dimensional principles and techniques used to formulate a creative expression.  Credit, 3 semester hours. PREREQ: ART 1050.

ART 3160.  Advanced Sculpture II

Advanced study in sculpture devoted to developing skills, techniques, and exploration of new materials.  Credit, 3 semester hours. PREREQ: ART 3150.

ART 3200.  Advanced Drawing I

Advanced study in drawing as a complete art form. Special attention will be given to the further development of conceptual approaches and contemporary trends in drawing. The student will develop and explore personal self‑generated project ideas in whatever drawing format that is considered appropriate for the project.  Credit, 3 semester hrs. PREREQ: ART 2320.

ART 3300.  Advanced Digital Arts II

ART 3300, Digital Arts II, is an opportunity for more advanced study in digital arts in general and more specifically in the areas of digital scanning and digital printing.  Studio projects and other assignments emphasize intermediate and higher level assignments which are relatively more complex and difficult than DA 1 and ADA I work and build on the instruction and experiences gained from those courses.  Instruction in the various creative use(s) of both hardware and software is emphasized with a particular focus on original digital image-making and computer-based printing.  In terms of assignments both individual and small group assignments can be expected. Optimally, ADA II students should expect to spend additional time in the digital studio beyond that already scheduled for the course.  Digital Arts students are encouraged to spend as much constructive time as possible in exploring the possibilities offered by this studio. Credit, 3 semester hours.  PREREQ: ART 3000. 

ART 3310.  Advanced Painting I

A course designed to broaden perceptive awareness in the areas of composition, space, and color theory.  Credit, 3 semester hours. PREREQ: ART 1320, 1330.

ART 3320.  Advanced Painting II

Continued development of painting skills with the emphasis on sustained media exploration.  Credit, 3 semester hours. PREREQ: ART 3310.

ART 3410.  Advanced Ceramics I

This course will teach more advanced techniques in handbuilding and mold making and on the potter’s wheel.  The students will continue their study of historical and contemporary uses of ceramics in the art world.  More advanced glazing and firing techniques will also be introduced.  Credit, 3 semester hours. PREREQ: ART 1110 or 1120.

ART 3420.  Advanced Ceramics II

The student in this course will choose a focus in either utilitarian or sculptural applications of the ceramic medium.  Further research into historical and contemporary ceramics in the art world, more personal investigation in an individual focus, and development of a conceptual direction in the medium will be included.  Continued study in glaze formulation, firing techniques, and kiln design will also be addressed.  Credit, 3 semester hours. PREREQ: ART 3410.

ART 3500.  Advanced Printmaking I

Advanced study in the intaglio and relief printmaking processes and the introduction of screen printing techniques.  Credit, 3 semester hours. PREREQ: ART 1400.

ART 3510.  Advanced Printmaking II

Advanced study in intaglio, relief, or screen printing printmaking processes and the introduction of the lithographic printing processes and techniques.  Credit, 3 semester hours. PREREQ: ART 3500.

ART 3600.  Problems Seminar I*

Credit is obtained by successful fulfillment of a contractual agreement between the student, supervision faculty and Department Chair.  Credit, 3 semester hours. PREREQ: Approval of Department Chair.

ART 3610.  Problems Seminar II*

A course designed to afford the talented student the opportunity to explore in depth an area of study not traditionally emphasized in the art curriculum. Credit is obtained by successful fulfillment of a contractual agreement between the student, supervising faculty, and Department Chair. Credit, 3 semester hours. PREREQ: Approval of Department Chair. 

ART 3800. Media Integration (BRD 3800, MUS 3800)

Media Integration is a cooperative, cross-listed course taught by the faculty from Art, Music, and Mass Communication departments. The purpose of this course is to offer an interdisciplinary, team-taught curriculum that integrates digital video, audio, animation, and graphics in a student centered studio environment.  Credit, 3 semester hours.

ART 4000.  Art Education Curriculum

Through a study of the historical developments in the field of art education, the art education major will come to understand the current discipline based approach to curriculum development in the visual arts. A goal is the integration of the domains of art production, art history, aesthetics, and art criticism into sequential units and lessons, reflecting cultural diversity of the population being served.   Credit, 3 semester hours. PREREQ: ART 3050, 3060, 3080. 

ART 4031.  Professional Art Practices

Preparation and presentation of professional material, with special attention to portfolios, résumés, and artist statements.  Students will cover a broad range of concerns essential to the art major, including senior exhibition, contemporary theory, continued study in graduate school, and careers in the professional art world.  Credit, 3 semester hours.  PREREQ:  Completion of all core courses, to be taken the semester before the senior exhibition.

ART 4070, 4080.   Art Supervision

Restricted to the advanced major who is supervising only in his area of concentration or secondary interest and has junior or senior standing. Designed for advanced art majors to obtain experience in directing beginning students in studio techniques.  Credit, 3 semester hours

ART 4090.  Advanced Printmaking III

Advanced study in the lithographic printing processes and further study in intaglio, relief, and screen printing processes and techniques.  Credit, 3 semester hours PREREQ: ART 3510. 

ART 4100.  Advanced Printmaking IV

Advanced study in any of the four basic printmaking processes with special focus on experimental and multi‑media printmaking processes and techniques.  Credit, 3 semester hours. PREREQ: ART 4090.

ART 4150.  Advanced Sculpture III

Advanced study devoted to developing advanced aesthetics and independent motivation in sculpture.  Credit, 3 semester hours. PREREQ: ART 3160.

ART 4160.  Advanced Sculpture IV

A course in sculpture devoted to developing the student’s creative expression in sculpture according to his or her own talents and experiences.  Credit, 3 semester hours. PREREQ: ART 4150.

ART 4200.  Advanced Drawing II

A course designed to provide advanced study in drawing processes devoted to developing skills, techniques, conceptual approach, and exploration of new materials. Further research into contemporary drawing and its relationship to other art disciplines will be included.  Credit, 3 semester hours.  PREREQ:  ART 1320, 2320, 3200.

ART 4220.  Renaissance Art

A survey of Northern European and Italian art from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.  Emphasis on major artists, workshop methods, style, meaning, patronage, and the function of art in a range of social contexts.  Major artistic developments and their cultural contexts will be examined. Credit, 3 semester hours.

ART 4230.  Modern Art

A survey of the major movements in early 20^th-century art and aesthetics that developed primarily in Europe.  Includes a review of late 19^th-century modernist antecedents with emphasis placed on the movements of the early 20^th century, including Fauvism (Matisse), Expressionism (Kandinsky), Cubism (Picasso), Futurism (Balla), Dada (Duchamp) and Surrealism (Dali) among others.  Major artistic developments and their cultural contexts will be examined.  Credit, 3 semester hours.

ART 4240.  Contemporary Art

A survey of the major movements in art produced since 1945.  Emphasis on cultural and historical phenomena related to Abstract Expressionism (Pollock), Pop Art (Warhol), Op Art (Riley), Minimalism (Judd), Super Realism (Estes), and Conceptual Art (Kosuth) among others.  In addition to painting, sculpture, photography, and architecture, the course examines assemblage, happenings, installations, body and performance art.  Credit, 3 semester hours. 

ART 4250.  European Art, 1600‑1850

A survey of European painting, architecture, and sculpture from the early seventeenth through the mid-nineteenth centuries.  Emphasis on the major artists, patrons, and styles, including Baroque (Bernini), Rococo (Watteau), Neo-Classicism (David), and Romanticism (Gericault), among others.  Major artistic developments and their cultural contexts will be examined.  Credit, 3 semester hours.

ART 4260.  Art of the United States

A study of U.S. painting, architecture, and sculpture from Colonial times to the present, with an emphasis on 20th century art. Credit, 3 semester hours.

ART 4270.  North American Indian Art (AIS 4270)

A survey course of the range of artistic expression of the North American Indians, from prehistoric to the 20th century. The course will cover paintings, sculpture, types of habitation, crafts, and ceremonial arts. Credit, 3 semester hours. 

ART 4280.  Greek and Roman Art

An overview of art and archaeology related to the ancient history and cultures of the Greeks and Romans.  Emphasis placed on Greek sculpture, vase painting, and architecture from 3000 BC to 150 B.C., and Roman art from 500 B.C. to 330 A.D. Major artistic developments and their cultural contexts will be examined.  Credit, 3 semester hours.

ART 4290.  Medieval Art

A survey of European sacred and secular arts produced during the Middle Ages, from about 300 A.D. to 1450 A.D., including Early Christian, Byzantine, Carolingian, Ottonian, Romanesque, and Gothic Art.  Emphasis on church and monastic architecture, sculpture and illuminated manuscripts. Major artistic developments and their cultural contexts will be examined. Credit, 3 semester hours.

ART 4300.  Advanced Digital Arts III

Advanced Digital Arts III, Advanced Digital Studio, is an opportunity for more tightly focused and sophisticated inquiry into digital arts and related domains of study. Projects emphasize advanced and often highly individualized problems in various areas of digital art and related domains. Emphasis is placed on the development of a visual description of each student’s personal aesthetic in the form of a portfolio of printed and digital images.  Moreover, students are prepared to enter juried competitions at the regional and national levels. PREREQ: ART 3300.   Credit, 3 semester hours.

ART 4350.  Advanced Painting III

An exploration of the various manners and approaches to creative painting and their relationship to the individual’s experience.  Credit, 3 semester hours. PREREQ: ART 3320. 

ART 4360.  Advanced Painting IV

A course for the student’s personal development of individual expression in painting.  Credit, 3 semester hours. PREREQ: ART 4350. 

ART 4410.  Advanced Ceramics III

Students continue in their chosen direction in either utilitarian or sculptural applications of the ceramic medium.  Continued research into historical and contemporary ceramics in the art world will be a major focus.  Kiln building, kiln repair, and more advanced knowledge of firing and glazing techniques will be explored.  Credit, 3 semester hours. PREREQ: ART 3420.

ART 4420.  Advanced Ceramics IV

In the final advanced class in ceramics, students will continue in their chosen direction in either utilitarian or sculptural applications of the ceramic medium. Contemporary craft theory and more conceptual development will be emphasized.  Artists’ statements and portfolio development for their senior shows and graduate school application will also be emphasized.   Credit, 3 semester hours. PREREQ: ART 4410.

ART 4580.  Media Integration Production (BRD 4580, MUS 4580)

This course is an opportunity for further interdisciplinary study in MI. Projects and assignments emphasize the production of digital content for multimedia projects. Products will be from the areas of still digital image-making, digital photography, computer-based printing, digital audio recording and editing, MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface), digital animation, and digital videography and editing. Students will have intensive hands-on experience in each area, resulting in an understanding of the techniques and concepts involved in the design and implementation of multimedia projects. Both individual and group assignments can be expected. Credit, 3 semester hours. PREREQ: ART/BRD/MUS 3800

ART 4600.  Problems Seminar III*

ART 4610.  Problems Seminar IV*

ART 4800.  Projects in Media Integration (BRD 4800, MUS 4800)

This course is an opportunity for advanced interdisciplinary study in MI. Assignments emphasize the design and integration of digital content for multimedia projects. Students will propose and prototype a project and participate in the team development of a final project. Students will also be assigned roles in the creative decision-making and work involved in proposals under development and/or consideration in the UNCP Media Integration Project. Students’ products will be expected to relate to the three essential aspects of the University mission—teaching, research, and service—and have the potential to serve as professional examples for student portfolios. ART 4990.  Independent Study in Art

Prerequisites: Introductory course in chosen area and approval of Department Chair.  Directed reading, research, and problem solving in the student’s major or secondary area of interest. This course is designed to fulfill individual and specific needs of art majors in their particular area of advanced study.  Credit, 1-3 semester hours.

Study of a specific genre or topic in Art History: its characteristics and significance as both a cultural product and a form of artistic expression. Title and topic will vary from year to year.  Credit, 3 semester hours.
