Participant Responsibilities

As a student at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke, it is your responsibility to attend class, take notes, and do your assigned work. The tutoring sessions offered through the Tutoring Program are intended to supplement what you are learning in class, in addition to contact with your professors during class and office hours.

Attendance Policy (Updated Spring 2013)

If you have requested a weekly tutoring appointment, you are expected to attend on a regular basis.

Excused Absences: You will be allowed 2 excused absences per semester. You should notify the Tutoring Program Coordinator 24 hours in advance if you cannot attend your scheduled appointment. If you are unable to give a 24-hour advance notice, you should provide a valid reason for the cancellation.

Unexcused Absences: An excessive number of unexcused absences can result in removal from the tutoring schedule. Once you have been removed, you will have to meet with the Tutoring Program Coordinator in person to request to be added back to the tutoring schedule.

If you have attended at least one tutoring session during the semester, you will be removed from the schedule after 3 unexcused absences. If you have never attended a tutoring session and do not respond to attempts at communication, you will be removed from the schedule after 2 unexcused absences.

As a participant of the Tutoring Program, you agree to the following guidelines:

  • I understand that tutoring sessions are not a substitution for classroom instruction. I agree to attend class on a regular basis.
  • I will be prepared for my tutoring sessions by completing all course assignments (readings, homework, lab reports, etc.) prior to the session. I agree to bring my textbook, notes, and questions to each session.
  • I understand that my tutor is not expected to do my work for me. The tutor can explain material, review assignments, help me prepare for tests, and provide supplemental materials if available. Tutors do not re-teach course material.
  • I will notify the Tutoring Program Coordinator if I no longer need my tutoring session(s) so that my appointment time may be offered to another student.

If you have any questions regarding the Tutoring Program guidelines, please contact Courtney Walters, Tutoring Program Coordinator, at courtney.walters@uncp.edu or 910-775-4408.
