how to become a peer educator

Thank you for your interest in the Peer Educator position for the Peer Study Support Program. It is a wonderful opportunity to help your peers succeed in their academic endeavors.

In order to be considered for the Peer Educator position, the selection criteria are as follows:

  • A grade of B- or better in the course(s) you are interested in leading a study session (see attached for list of courses)
  • A cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better
  • Firm command of the course material
  • Higher order thinking skills
  • Proactive learning strategies
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Dependability
  • Assertiveness

In addition to the application, you must submit a Faculty Recommendation Form (requires Microsoft Word) for each subject/course you would like to conduct a study session for. You only have to submit this form only once, unless you decide to add a new subject area.

Before you begin, there will be a three to four hour paid training session at the beginning of fall/spring semester, which will cover program policy and procedures. At this time, you can elect to be a paid peer educator or use the hours towards your community service requirements for your campus organization. You can even schedule your session(s) at your convenience during UNCP class hours (Monday thru Thursday 9 am-9 pm and Friday 9 am-4 pm). Please refer to the List of General Education courses (requires Microsoft Word) to see which course(s) you would like to lead a study session (s) for.

Please take a moment to fill out the on-line Peer Educator Application or stop by the Office of Advisement and Retention and pick up an application packet. This position is an excellent venue for you to develop your paraprofessional skills and to make a difference in the academic achievements of your peers.
