What is the Freshman Seminar course?
The University of North Carolina at Pembroke developed Freshman Seminar to aid and enhance the experience of the first year student. We recognize that the transition to college can sometimes be challenging and seek to encourage the success of each first year student.

Do other colleges and universities have a Freshman Seminar course?
A recent survey from the National Resource Center for The First-Year Experience and Students in Transition found that over 80% of responding colleges and universities offered some type of freshman or first-year seminar. Each institution develops the format that works best for their campus and mission.

Is Freshman Seminar required?
Yes! This course is one of the general education requirements that all University of North Carolina at Pembroke students must meet to earn their degree. The only exception is for transfer students coming to the University of North Carolina at Pembroke with more than 15 transfer credit hours.

Why are we required to take the Freshman Seminar?
The transition to college can be challenging for many first-year students.  Freshman Seminar is a course designed to assist students with this transition by introducing them to the various campus and community resources that will prepare them for success at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke.  Students will have the opportunity to learn various study skills, discuss issues related to adapting to college life, learn about campus resources to assist them and engage in social and community activities with other students.

Does Freshman Seminar count towards my degree?
Yes! It does count toward the general education requirements that are required of all UNCP students regardless of degree program.

How many credits is the Freshman Seminar?
The Freshman Seminar is a one credit hour class.

What grade do I need to pass the course?
A passing grade for the Freshman Seminar is grade of C. If you do not pass the course with a C, you will be required to retake and pass the course before you complete your degree.

Who teaches the Freshman Seminar?
The Freshman Seminar instructors are comprised of UNCP faculty and staff from various areas and departments on campus. UPeers, student mentors, serve as co-teachers for the course.

Who is my Advisor?
All freshman students coming to UNCP who have not declared their major, will be advised by their Freshman Seminar instructor until you officially declare your majors.
