Mission : Biotechnology Think Tank has been designed and delivered by the University of North Carolina at Pembroke Biotechnology Business and Training Center to catalyze the increased understanding of science and technology that is fundamental to the business of biotechnology. As the state of North Carolina continues to develop and deliver the published comprehensive strategy for strengthening its economy through biotechnology, it is the responsibility of its citizens to keep informed of the issues. The North Carolina biotechnology industry continues to grow as a major business sector; and thus profoundly impacts the educational, social and economic dimensions of the people of North Carolina. It is the aim of the the UNC Pembroke Biotechnology Think Tank to serve as a patron-directed resource. Biotechnology Think Tank will provide a dynamic forum for discussion of critical biotechnology advances and issues. Patrons are encouraged to contribute viewpoints and questions on an array of scientific, economic and ethical areas. Biotechnology Think Tank is about discovery.
About the Project: Biotechnology Think Tank is funded by the North Carolina Biotechnology Center under their Educational Enhancement Grants Program. The project is a product of the Agricultural Biotechnology High School Academy project of the summer 2005. In this academy 6 partner community colleges hosted, in their laboratories, 3-day agricultural biotechnology academies. About 15 biotechnology-motivated high school students participated in each academy. Over the course of the 3 days the students conducted biotechnology experiments in areas such as animal biotechnology, plant biotechnology and environmental biotechnology. Each academy also had a visiting scientist who presented some of his/her work to the group. Overall, about 50% of the students’ time was spent in the laboratory learning practical skills.
