Project Overview
NSF funding (3-year grant, $600,000—NSF and $60,000—UNCP)
will enable Project BIO to:
- Support regional efforts to foster the establishment and growth of
a biotechnology cluster in Southeast North Carolina;
- Create a partnership to develop the UNC Pembroke Biotechnology Business
and Industrial Training
Center; and
- Provide biotechnology workshops, courses, seminars and conferences
of direct practical value to participants from academia, industry and
persons involved in economic development transformation.
Specific Project BIO Goals
- Increase higher-paying jobs in the region by 100.
- Increase available workforce in biomanufacturing by providing training
opportunities for 300 individuals and establishing or enhancing the
BioWorks Program at 5 community colleges.
- Increase knowledge base for 150 incumbent workers in biotechnology
related training.
- Provide curriculum development and teacher training in biotechnology
for 75 K-16 science teachers.
- Facilitate entry of 75 students from 2-year colleges to 4-year colleges/universities
with biotech programs.
- Establish 3 new businesses by coordinating technology, business support
sources and capital for entrepreneurs.
Broader Project Bio Impact Goals
- Advance discovery and understanding, while promoting teaching, training
and learning.
- Establish research and education collaborations.
- Provide biotechnology presentations to the broader community.
- Broaden dissemination to enhance scientific and technological understanding
by fostering partnerships.
- Develop new approaches for delivery of courses (on-line).
- Broaden participation for underrepresented groups.

- Total 3 Year Project = $600,000
- Cost Sharing by UNCP = $73,534
