Project Overview

NSF funding (3-year grant, $600,000—NSF and $60,000—UNCP) will enable Project BIO to:

Support regional efforts to foster the establishment and growth of a biotechnology cluster in Southeast North Carolina;
Create a partnership to develop the UNC Pembroke Biotechnology Business and Industrial Training
Center; and
Provide biotechnology workshops, courses, seminars and conferences of direct practical value to participants from academia, industry and persons involved in economic development transformation.

Specific Project BIO Goals

Increase higher-paying jobs in the region by 100.
Increase available workforce in biomanufacturing by providing training opportunities for 300 individuals and establishing or enhancing the BioWorks Program at 5 community colleges.
Increase knowledge base for 150 incumbent workers in biotechnology related training.
Provide curriculum development and teacher training in biotechnology for 75 K-16 science teachers.
Facilitate entry of 75 students from 2-year colleges to 4-year colleges/universities with biotech programs.
Establish 3 new businesses by coordinating technology, business support sources and capital for entrepreneurs.

Broader Project Bio Impact Goals

Advance discovery and understanding, while promoting teaching, training and learning.
Establish research and education collaborations.
Provide biotechnology presentations to the broader community.
Broaden dissemination to enhance scientific and technological understanding by fostering partnerships.
Develop new approaches for delivery of courses (on-line).
Broaden participation for underrepresented groups.
