Research, Internships, Etc.

BIO 4990: Research in Biology
While coursework and a high GPA are of primary importance to someone Photo of Nicholas Faulkner and Dr. Jeremy Sellerswho wants to become a working biologist, research experience is highly desirable for someone who hopes to go on to graduate school and/or work in biological/medical research. One possible way to gain research experience is through our course BIO 4990: Research in Biology.

Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement
(RISE) program at UNCP for students who are considering a career in the area of biomedical research.

Summer Research Interships (Web Links)
Another excellent way to gain research experience is by being awarded a summer research internship at another institution, research lab, etc. Some students are able to complete 1-2 such internships during their undergraduate years at UNCP. Such experiences broaden one's knowledge of science, while strengthening one's resume by illustrating interest and commitment to biology.

You should look and apply early for internships. It seems that those who do so have a slight edge over those who wait until the last minute. View a list of some institutions/websites that contain information concerning internships or similar opportunities.

ENV 4900: Internship in Environmental Science
Students who are majoring in Environmental Science are required to complete an internship ENV 4900: Internship. Questions about the internship may be addressed to Dr. Leon Jernigan, faculty coordinator for the Environmental Science Degree.

Unique Opportunities:

  • Marine Biology: Three Seas Program is a one-year program in marine biology at Northeastern University (Massachusetts) that is geared toward advanced undergraduate students.
  • Marine Sciences: Funded by the National Science Foundation, the Multicultural Initiative in the Marine Sciences provides an opportunity for eight undergraduate students to spend two quarters (January 4 - June 8 with a spring break from March 17-27, 2011) at the Shannon Point Marine Center in Washington state.
A related program is the Research Experiences for Undergraduates (summer 2011) at the Shannon Point Marine Center.
  • Microbiology: Summer Research Program for undergraduates is available at the University of Iowa Department of Microbiology. The program pays a stipend and is especially interested in disabled students, minority students, and disadvantaged students (economically or first in family to attend college).
  • Assistance for Beginning Graduate Students: National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program provides three years of financial support for students at or near the beginning of graduate studies.
