Programs

The department offers the following programs leading to the Bachelor of Science degree in Biology with indicated track, concentration, or licensure. A checksheet, listing course requirements for each degree, below each program, is available as Word and PDF files.

  • Biology (with tracks in Botany, Zoology, Molecular Biology, or Environmental Biology possible)
  • Biology - Medical Technology Program: Dr. Velinda Woriax, Coordinator
  • Biology - Biomedical Emphasis
  • Environmental Science: Dr. Leon Jernigan, Director
  • Biotechnology (new interdisciplinary program - also listed with the Chemistry Department)
  • Biology/Science Education

    The Biology Department also houses the Science Education Programs. Degrees available include a B.S. degree in Biology Education and a B.S. in Science Education with a concentration in Biology, Chemistry, Geology, or Physics. A Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in Science Ed. with a concentration in Biology, Chemistry, Geology, or Physics is available for teachers that currently hold a Standard Professional I License and wish to earn an Advanced License. An M.A. degree in Science Ed. non-licensure concentration is also available for students who do not wish to earn teacher licensure. For students that have a bachelor's degree in the natural sciences and wish to earn teacher licensure, the Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) degree with Science (9-12) specialization leads to both the Standard Professional I and Advanced Licenses.

Academic Concentration in Biology

For students seeking a baccalaureate degree in Elementary Education, Middle Grades Education, Special Education, or Physical Education, the Biology Department offers an Academic Concentration of 26 hours. This Academic Concentration is available to other students, regardless of major.

Required Courses for an Academic Concentration in Biology:

  • BIOL 1000, BIO 1000, 1010, 1020, 1030, BIO 3710 (or an approved upper-level biology course with a laboratory), ENV 2100, CHM 1300, 1100
