Biology Major Stephanie Edwards Wins Award at PURC Symposium (April 2011)

Stephanie Edwards' research poster was recognized at the Pembroke Undergraduate Research and Creativity (PURC) Symposium, held 13 April 2011, in the University Center Annex. Stephanie's poster, titled “A Quantitative and Qualitative Analysis of Soil Microorganisms from a Biochar Farm in Bladen County, North Carolina over Three Crop Seasons,” was awarded Second Place in the Sciences.

On average, 74% of facultative bacteria she tested from three sampling periods showed phenol resistance. Stephanie worked on the study from May to December 2010, under the guidance of Dr. Marilu Santos, Professor of Microbiology in the Department of Biology. Their work, funded by UNCP-RISE, has given rise to several new studies, including a study of phenol and ampicillin resistant bacteria in soil, and the cause and mechanism of phenol resistance in bacteria. 

Upon graduation, Stephanie plans to attend graduate school to study infectious disease, cancer, pathology, or microbiology. Among the schools she is considering are UNC-Chapel Hill, North Carolina State University, and Duke University.
