Marilu Santos and Howard Ling Present Research Paper
(January 2011)
Dr. Marilu Santos of the Biology Department and Dr. Howard Ling of the School of Business presented a paper at the Annual Meeting of the International Academy of Business and Public Administration Disciplines (IABPAD) on January 3 to 6, 2011 in Orlando, Florida. The paper is an extension of a pilot study (Ling, Howard and Marilu E. Santos. 2009. “Do Consumers View Genetically Modified Food from Crops and Livestock Differently”. International Journal of Business, Marketing, and Decision Sciences, Vol. 2, Number 1. ISSN 1942-8162) which examines whether Filipino and American consumers hold different attitudes toward genetically modified (GM) food from crops.
The results of this study strongly suggest that Filipinos perceive food derived from GM crops to be more useful, more morally acceptable, less personally risky and more economically necessary than do their American counterparts. Further, Filipinos think that the production of GM food crops should receive support from the government. This study concludes with a discussion of the ways by which marketers may reduce consumer resistance to food derived from GM food.
The paper was awarded Best Research in the discipline of green marketing and is also accepted for publication in the 2011 IABPAD Conference Proceedings.
