Biology Graduate, Miller Slaughter, is Working as an Intern for "Sustainable Sandhills" (February 2011)
Miller Slaughter, who graduated in May 2010, with a B.S. in Biology (and a track in Environmental Biology), is now an intern for the non-profit organization, Sustainable Sandhills. Working from her office at St. Andrews Presbyterian College, she interacts with the student Green Team, and she certifies “green” businesses and schools, mostly in Scotland County.
Her hiring was made possible through a $165,200 grant, supporting nine full-time interns, awarded to Sustainable Sandhills by the North Carolina State Energy Office. Other interns are working in Cumberland, Harnett, and Moore County schools, the city of Fayetteville, and Fayetteville State University, where they perform energy audits on schools, businesses, and local government buildings.
Miller can barely contain her enthusiasm --- “I am learning how to do these audits and help businesses be more healthy and profitable. I have learned a lot since we started in October. I love it! I am just where I want to be! And believe me, I know I am lucky to be where I am.”
Sustainable Sandhills is an independent nonprofit organization that endeavors to reduce the ecological footprints of various human activities (e.g., agriculture, commerce and economy, and military) in an eight-county region surrounding Fort Bragg. Emphasis is placed on air quality, green growth, green living and design, green businesses and schools, local foods, and recycling.
