Environmental Science major, Zachary Barthel, and his Mentor,
Dr. Leon Jernigan, Present their Research at a National Ecological Conference (August 2011)
Senior Environmental Science major, Zach Barthel, and his mentor, Dr. Leon Jernigan, presented a research poster (“Assessment of Secondary Ecosystem Succession in Hoke County, North Carolina”) at the 96th Annual Meeting of the Ecological Society of America (ESA). Dr. Jernigan and his research team (Zach and Environmental Science majors Doshie Smith and Caleb Sutton) collected data over the past year, as part of a collaborative project funded by the National Science Foundation. In addition to UNCP, the collaboration involves four other North Carolina universities: Johnson C. Smith, Livingstone College, North Carolina State University, and Western Carolina.
Research teams from all five universities used LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) imagery to predict successional stages of forests throughout North Carolina. All five teams presented posters, covering their aspect of the project, at the annual meeting of the ESA, held 7-12 August 2011, in Austin, Texas.
Project funding ends this month, but Principal Investigator, Ryan Emanual (NCSU) plans to seek funding for another year. Dr. Jernigan will likely seek new students for the coming year, as his current team of students have graduated or are nearing graduation.
All students majoring in Environmental Science are required to complete a
research internship. Internship information can be obtained at http://www.uncp.edu/home/jernigan/Internship Info/Index.htm, or by consulting Dr. Jernigan, who is faculty coordinator for the Environmental Science degree.
