Environmental Science Major, Layla Locklear, Wins “Woman to Watch” National American Indian Women Award
(September 2011)

Photo of Layla Locklear and Rosa Revels WinfreeLayla Locklear, a sophomore majoring in Environmental Science, is the recipient of the distinguished “Woman to Watch” National American Indian Women Award. She was honored with the award during a banquet at the Conference for American Indian Women of Proud Nations (AIWPN). The conference was held on 16 September 2011, in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Each year at the AIWPN conference, seven American Indian women are honored for their contributions to the American Indian community.  These award recipients have:

  • Made a special impact on individual Indians, Indian families or an Indian community at large.
  • Inspired others to volunteer for community service.
  • Been a catalyst for new visions, understanding and positive change in an Indian community.

Layla is also recipient of the 2011 Community Impact Award, given by the UNCP Office for Community & Civic Engagement. The award recognizes her outstanding service to the community, her student leadership, and her efforts in educating and mentoring K-12 youth in community service and civic engagement. Along with the award comes a $200.00 book scholarship and a gift from the UNCP Bookstore.

Layla is a native of Robeson County and is pursuing a minor in American Indian Studies. She is the daughter of John and Tonya Locklear (the later whom is Administrative Assistant for the Department of Biology).
