Honors College Freshmen Float the Lumber River (8 October 2011)
Eight students from the Esther G. Maynor Honors College (Freshman Seminar Honors and Environmental Science Honors) floated the Lumber River on a gorgeous Saturday in October. Joining the students were three members of the Honors faculty --- Drs. M.J. Braun, Teagan Decker, and Lisa Kelly -- and Dr. Braun's brother John.
Led by guides from Riverway Outdoor Adventure & Education Center in Lumberton, canoes and kayaks were launched on McMillan Beach, just west of Lumberton, and participants were treated to a leisurely, two-hour paddle downstream to Riverway. Bald cypress, river birch, and planer tree graced the banks of the river, and in places where river birch trees leaned precipitously over the water, the river seemed to course through a living tunnel.
The adventure ended early in the afternoon, and the party enjoyed sandwiches, chips, and luscious fruit for lunch. Drs. Teagan Decker and M.J. Braun organized the trip, providing an exceptional opportunity for students to experience one of southeastern North Carolina's most pristine ecosystems.
The Lumber River is a National Wild & Scenic River and a State Natural &
Scenic River. It is the only blackwater river in North Carolina that is in the Wild & Scenic River system.
Since its initiation in the fall of 2001, the Honors College has sought to attract top scholars. The College strives to provide an enriching environment that stimulates personal and academic growth. Students are afforded interdisciplinary educational opportunities as well as cultural and social opportunities.
Riverway is owned and operated by the Center for Community Action.
