Prof. Erika Young Presents Her Doctoral Research During Departmental Science Seminar (March 2012)

Addressing a standing-room-only audience, Prof. Erika Young discussed her dissertation research during Science Seminar on 13 March 2012.

Her talk titled, "Coastal Marine Ecosystems are Influenced by Anthropogenic Modification on Foundation Species: Squeezed Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea," explored the effects of bulkheads on salt marsh fauna, including fishes, birds, and nekton of coastal North Carolina. In supplemental research, she used a series of mesocosms to experimentally examine the effects of oyster biodeposits on marsh ecosystem services.

Prof. Young is completing her doctoral degree through the Marine Science Department at UNC-Chapel Hill. Her laboratories studies were based at the UNC Institute of Marine Sciences in Morehead City.

As a UNCP alumna and the former Erika Yates, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology (with tracks in Zoology, Botany, and Environmental Biology) in the year 2000. She earned a Master's degree in 2003 at Western Carolina University, where she studied dragonflies.

Professor Young teaches BIO and BIOL 1000 Principles of Biology and Lab, BIO 1020 General Zoology, and BIO 1060 Exploring Life's Diversity, for the Department of Biology.
