Entomology Class Nets Insects in Highlands, NC (October 2011)
Dr. Bruce Ezell's Entomology
class (BIO 3010) traveled to
Highlands, North Carolina, over the 2011 fall break (October 13-16) to study
the insect fauna. Joining the group were Biology Professor Erika Young and biology alumnae Sarah Brown and Courtney Kilgore. Course assistant, Fred Booth, describes the adventure below:
"The Highlands Biological Station is a wonderful facility to conduct our entomology field trip. Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, the area boasts spectacular mountain vistas and energetic waterfalls.
We utilized the Coker Laboratory for lectures and to examine the specimens we found on the station property and from the Chattooga River. The Chattooga River is wild and scenic with crystal clear water finding its way through huge boulders and potholes.
The hiking trails and nature museum at the station were interesting
additions to the weekend.
From the pastrami on rye at the local deli to the homemade ice-cream and fudge, the small mountain town of Highlands is well worth a visit also. It has many
unique arts and craft shops to browse through.
We all had a great time on the Highlands Plateau and formed some fantastic memories."
