Dr. Bonnie Kelley to Offer New Writing in the Discipline Course
(Fall 2012)

The rumor is true. Dr. Bonnie Kelley will be offering a new undergraduate course --- a writing in the discipline (WD) course --- for the spring 2013 semester. This 3-hour course is titled BIO 4700 Reading and Writing in the Natural Sciences. To meet the demand for students nearing graduation who must take a WD course, she will be offering two sections: 1) Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30-10:45 AM and 2) Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:30-1:45 PM. Students who wish to enroll in one of the sections must first receive permission from Dr. Kelley. Email her at bonnie.kelley@uncp.edu .

 

The new course will help address the University's new Writing Intensive Program (see pages 32-33 of the 2012-2013 catalog). Undergraduate students who are under the 2011-2012 (or later) catalog must complete the program, which requires a minimum of 6 hours of writing enriched (WE) courses and 3 hours of a writing in the discipline (WD) course. The latter course should be in the student's field of study.

Several existing courses within the Biology Department now qualify as writing enriched (WE) courses:

• *BIO 2050 Animal Behavior WE
• BIO 3510 Research Strategies WE
• *BIO 3710 Cell Biology WE
• BIO 4310 Biometrics WE
• *BIO 4320 Conservation Biology WE

An asterisk next to the course indicates the course will be offered in the spring of 2013.

Dr. Bonnie Kelley has been teaching within the Biology Department for well over 30 years, and she is well equipped to launch the new WD course. She developed several of the Department's courses, particularly those in the botanical sciences, and she has taught multiple workshops on teaching critical thinking in science. Her excellence in the classroom was recognized in 1995 when she was bestowed the first Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching.
