Biology Students and Faculty Present at Conference for the Association of Southeastern Biologists (April 2012)

The annual meeting of the Association of Southeastern Biologists (ASB) has become a habit for several members of the Biology Department.  Six members of the faculty and two students attended the 73nd Annual Meeting of the ASB, held on 4-6 April 2012, in Athens, Georgia. The meeting venue was the Georgia Center (run by university students) on the campus of the University of Georgia.

UNCP Environmental Science major Zachary Barthel presented his research poster on the use of LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) imagery to predict successional stages of forests in Hoke County, North Carolina. His co-authors on the poster were Drs. Ryan Emanuel and Leon Jernigan, and undergraduate alumni Caleb Sutton and Doshie Smith. Zach’s mentor Dr. Jernigan, and Environmental Science major Andrew Sutton also attended the meeting. (Pictured to the left are Zach Barthel and Dr. Leon Jernigan)

Four members of the biology faculty gave oral presentations:

Dr. Andrew Ash
(Herps – an informal science education curriculum to promote herpetological education, conservation and public engagement in underserved communities in North Carolina; co-authored by Catherine E. Matthews and Ann B. Somers of UNC Greensboro, and Terry M. Tomasek of Elon University). Dr. Ash is Past President of the ASB.

The Department’s Dr. Bonnie Kelley (past ASB vice president) served on the Silent Auction Committee, which brought in a record $5000, as conference attendees bid on donated items ranging from hand-made baskets, to jewelry, to bottles of wine. Emma Lucy Braun’s original classic text, Deciduous Forests of Eastern North America, fetched a staggering $500.

Always a meeting highlight, this year’s Thursday night social (titled The Devil Went Down to Georgia) featured the live band “The Highballs.” Some biologists know how to have fun.

The plenary speaker, Dr. David Schimel, Chief Science Officer and Principal Investigator for National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON), addressed the use of remote sensing in mapping the planet’s biota. The meeting featured three symposia and numerous paper and poster sessions. Next year’s meeting of the ASB will be held on April 10-13 in Charleston, West Virginia.
