Community Outreach
UNC Pembroke's mobile biodiesel reactor was created for one simple reason: so that the University is able to travel to surrounding areas to promote the use of biodiesel. The university desired to obtain a reactor in order to set an example for the surrounding community. The intent is to let the community know that biodiesel is environmentally friendly. It is clean burning, meaning it will add no carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. Recycling waste vegetable oil, which otherwise has no value, contributes to the preservation of natural resources since none have to be consumed to use or produce it; this also cuts down water pollution, preventing rises in the cost of water. The University wishes to reach as many people as possible, making them aware of biofuels, and that they too can make biofuels. UNCP is currently working with the city of Pembroke in order to encourage people to recycle their used vegetable oil, instead of pouring it down the drains. In the future, the community will be able to help the biofuels project, and the environment, by dropping off their waste vegetable oil at a drop-off point.
The biofuels project will reach out to the community by towing the reactor to schools, businesses, and other areas in the community and region. The hope is that the community will realize that biodiesel can be produced easily by individuals. During these visits, the biofuels team will present information about biodiesel, show how the reactor works by demonstrating the process, and show the final product to the community. Interested parties are able to contact the University, and set up a date and time for a presentation.
