SICK LEAVE

Human Resources Policy HR 15 98

SCOPE:

Applies to all employees who are members of the North Carolina State Retirement System.

PURPOSE:

To allow employees to retain sick leave balances when moving from leave earning status to non-leave earning status and to count such sick leave balances toward creditable service at retirement.

POLICY:

North Carolina General Statute #135-4(e) allows a member of the North Carolina Retirement System to count sick leave balances available at the time of retirement toward the creditable service calculation. It is UNC Pembroke's position that employees changing from a status in which sick leave is earned to one in which sick leave is not earned will maintain their sick leave balanced.

When such employee is eligible for retirement from the North Carolina State Employees Retirement System, the available sick leave balance will be counted in calculating creditable service pursuant to North Carolina General Statute #135-4(e).
