Paper Politics: Socially Engaged Printmaking Today is a major collection

global equity to engage community members in political conversation. Based

Drive By Press Workshop Landing at UNCP |
|---|
Posted September 8, 2009
The UNCP Art Department will host Drive By
Press from November 16 to 17, 2009. Drive By Press was created in 2005
when two artists and printmakers, Greg Nanney and Joseph Velasquez, met
in graduate school and made it their mission to share their enthusiasm
for printmaking with audiences everywhere. Before they could start, the
two artists sold their art, pawned their guitars, amps, and all else but
their souls in order to buy their printing press. They loaded the 600
pound 14th-century style machine in the back of their vehicle and took
off across the country and have been on the road ever since. The two,
dubbed kings of DIY printmaking, have now traveled over 100,000 miles
spreading ink and their style of guerilla art making at events across
America.
During the workshop, Joseph Velasquez and Ryan O'Malley will show their
artistic prowess by drawing and carving several exclusive single color
woodblock designs exclusive to Drive by Press. Guests are then able to
interact with the DBP during the printing process, selecting their own
combination of color and placement of the designs. Each help create their
very own piece of one-of-a-kind wearable art. The workshop will also include
lectures on the history of DBP and printmaking and presentations from
the DBP collection of original art. There will be individual student critiques
and a variety of printmaking demonstrations.
DBP has worked over 160 events from coast to coast, ranging from parties
with bands like Spoon, BRMC, Chromeo, Louis 14th, Dark Angels, White Rabbits,
The Walkmen, and Pepper, to art exhibitions, University events, and outdoor
music festivals. DBP has exhibited thousands of pieces of art in the form
of prints and has made over 10,000 pieces of unique wearable art along
the way. The UNCP DBP workshop will begin in Locklear Hall, Room 101,
Printmaking Studio, on November 16th at 10 AM and will continue until
4 PM on November 17, and is free and open to the public. This will be
the 2nd visit that DBP has made to UNCP. For more information, contact
UNCP printmaking professor Brandon Sanderson at 910.521.6406 or at brandon.sanderson@uncp.edu.

Artist's Statement
My present body of work is fueled by the question, “Am I more than
the sum of my parts?” I have begun to look separately at my consciousness,
roles, decisions, possessions, creations, consumption, faults, burdens,
and worries. This work becomes a quest for self definition as I move beyond
just inventorying these personal qualities to create images and objects
that depict my experience of these qualities.
In my current work, I focus on identifying and depicting the experience
of my worries. I make drawings and prints that depict the things I find
myself worrying about. The images often include every-day objects as metaphors
for the tension or conflict inherent to my worries. I focus on an emotive
use of line, color, and texture as I develop these images. The subject
matter and mark making work together to communicate to the viewer a sense
of tension. As a result, the viewer is left with the same uneasiness that
I experience through my worries.
