outstanding alumni educators

On March 16, 2004, UNCP honored four outstanding alumni educators during the Alumni Teaching Excellence Program. Each recipient received an engraved golden apple and base. The guest of Honor and speaker was Brian Freeman, winner of the Horace Mann National Education Association Foundation Award for Teaching Excellence. He received the Star Polisher Award.

Brian FreemanBrian Freeman ’92, a second grade teacher at Peterson Elementary School, received the Horace Mann National Education Association Foundation Award for Teaching Excellence. Brian received $10,000 for his nomination and he received a $25,000 cash award in December for the grand prize. Brian is the first male teacher to ever receive this prestigious award. Felecia Hunt ’88 of Purnell Swett High School is Robeson County’s Teacher of the Year for 2003-2004. Hunt was hired as the marketing teacher at Purnell Swett in 1995.

Jamie BrownJamie Darian Brown ‘98 was recently voted Teacher of the Year at North Moore High School, where he teaches language arts & writing. On April 30th, he received the Teacher of the Year award for the entire county at a special banquet held at the Pinehurst Country Club. He was honored at the back-to-school convocation service at Pinecrest High School on July 29th. He received an additional $1,500 from Phillips Ford of Carthage. Jamie received $200 for earning the school's T.O.Y distinction and an additional $400 for the county's T.O.Y distinction. He will also be given a laptop computer to use for the duration of his teaching career. Jamie is very proud to be a former Fellow and graduate of UNCP. Jamie earned his National Board Certification in 2003. His parents are Albert & Catherine Brown of Robbins, N.C. He is married to Heidi Williams Brown ’01

Kay Thompson ’89 has been named Teacher of the Year for Brunswick County where she teaches 5th graders at Waccamaw Elementary School. Thompson, who now lives at Holden Beach, began teaching 15 years ago and has been with Waccamaw for four years. Most recently, Kay was named NC Southeastern Regional Teacher of the Year. She competes for the State title in May, 2004.
