National Mission Statement

American Indian Science & Engineering Society (AISES) is a national, nonprofit organization which nurtures building of community by bridging science and technology with traditional Native values.

Through its educational programs, AISES provides opportunities for American Indians and Native Alaskans to pursue studies in science, engineering, business and other academic arenas.

The trained professionals then become technologically informed leaders within the Indian community. AISES' ultimate goal is to be a catalyst for the advancement of American Indians and Native Alaskans as they seek to become self-reliant and self-determined memebers of society.
Chapter History

The The American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) Chapter of the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, then known as Pembroke State University, through the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, became a chartered organization on September 26, 1991.

The AISES Chapter was initiated and formed by a group of 8 students in whose purpose was to (1) Encourage Native American Student interest in Science and Engineering, (2) Encourage participation of the Native American community in Science and Engineering, and (3) Promote Native American Scientists.

This group would have bi-monthly meetings and, qualifications to become a member of this organization would be that a student must be a paid student member of the National Chapter of the American Indian Science and Engineering Society.
National History

The American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) was created by American Indian scientists, engineers and educators in 1977. In view of the high dropout rates and low college enrollement and graduation rates of American Indians compared with all other ethnic groups in the United States, and the severe underrepresentation of American Indians in the science and engineering fields, Native professionals resolved to create an organization that would identify and remove the barriers to academic success for Native students.

Through a variety of educational programs, AISES offers financial academic and cultural support to American Indians and Alaska Natives from middle school through graduate school. AISES provides professional development activities to enable teachers to work effectively with Native students. It also develops culturally appropriate curricula and publications. AISES builds partnerships with tribes, schools, other non-profit organizations, corporations, foundations and government agencies to realize its goals.

AISES especially helps American Indian and Native Alaskan students prepare for careers in science, technology, engineering and business. American Indians live on lands with abundant natural resources and potentianl for development with proper management of those resources by skilled Indian professionals, tribal nations will be able to take giant steps to diminish the persistent problems of alcoholism, poverty, suicide and despair, and to build strong and sustainable Indian and Alaskan communities characterized by self-determination and self-reliance.
