Biography
Born in New York City, Chet majored in English, and minored in Psychology and Political Science for his undergraduate degree. His extra-curricula included: theatre, broadcasting and spelunking. After receiving his BA, he taught in Virginia high schools for six years and served as chair of a senior high English Department. He also directed plays and his students performed well in the Virginia High School League competitions. Enjoying his work with the theatre, he left high school work to return to school for his M.A. and Ph.D. in theatre with a secondary area of broadcasting. Since then he taught at James Madison University, Sul Ross State University in Texas and for the past 29 years here at UNCP.
What have you learned while teaching at UNCP?
While serving on various state committees for UNCP, I've discovered that our faculty is particularly included and involved in the University governance. I have been regularly surprised that other of our system universities do not have as much involvement with their university's academic decisions. I believe that an active, participating faculty speaks well of UNCP, not only the faculty, but the students and administration as well.
What do students like best about your class?
I hope they enjoy my sense of humor!
What makes the classroom experience at UNCP unique?
I enjoy the small classes, the diversity of our students and the variety of experiences they bring to each other in our communication and theatre classes.
Additional Comments
Working with theatre students, be it in class, on stage or backstage, is exciting and rewarding. These people push themselves to learn and achieve for their own personal reasons since there are few grades involved.
