Chemistry
Biography
I was born and raised in Lumberton, NC. I earned a BS in Chemistry with a Biomedical Emphasis from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke (then Pembroke State University) and a PhD in Pharmacy from the University of Georgia.
What have you learned while teaching at UNCP?
I began teaching at UNCP in 2002 and since this was my first real teaching experience, I have learned so much! First of all, I have learned that teaching is very rewarding and that it is great to have a career that you love and enjoy! I must confess that science was not my 'first love'! My enthusiasm for chemistry developed under the care of many outstanding teachers whose guidance helped me to appreciate the fascinating world of science. Therefore, I have learned the importance of mentoring students inside and outside of the classroom in an effort to guide them along their educational journeys.
What do students like best about your class?
I attempt to create a student-centered classroom whereby my enthusiasm for chemistry is portrayed through my teaching. Although students comment on the rigor required in the classroom, they are comfortable asking questions and discussing their educational goals. This comfort is a result of the students knowing that, most importantly, I care about them as people. By doing so, I hope to earn their respect and trust, both of which I believe are necessary to foster intellectual growth.
What makes the classroom experience at UNCP unique?
The classes at UNCP are built on relationships. The professors make a sincere effort to know students in hopes of better serving them in their educational endeavors. The students at UNCP are dedicated to their own learning and they work hard to achieve their academic goals.
Additional Comments
The faculty at UNCP has a passion for learning, teaching, and research. Therefore, students have amazing opportunities to become involved both inside and outside of the classroom. You are sure to find your passion at UNCP!
