Biography
I received a BA in English Language and Literature from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke in 1990. I received a Masters in 1992 and a Ph.D. in 1998, from North Carolina State University in Counselor Education with minors in Multicultural Counseling and Psychology. Currently, I am the Director of Assessment, as well as an associate professor in the School of Education at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. My teaching specialty is School Counseling, Applied Educational Research and Advanced Educational Psychology. I received a two-year post-doctoral fellowship to study at the Resource Center on Minority Aging Research at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center funded by the National Institute on Aging. This program focused on training American Indian and Alaska Native junior faculty for academic careers working with Native communities. In addition, I received a two-year post-doctoral fellowship to conduct research on the Native-American aging population in North Carolina State University's Psychology Department, also funded by the National Institute on Aging. I have 20 years experience with the State of North Carolina. My first job out of college was as a high school counselor in the Public Schools of Robeson County. I also worked at North Carolina State University for 5 years before returning to UNCP.
What have you learned while teaching at UNCP?
I have learned that college students are basically the same everywhere. The students who choose to work hard are always successful.
What do students like best about your class?
Students enjoy my accessibility outside of class. They can always reach me by email, telephone or office hours.
Additional Comments
The UNCP classroom experience is unique due to the small class size and easy access to the professors.
