What have you learned while teaching at UNCP?
That UNCP is a place where change is embraced and incorporated into the rich history of the university. This is rare. Too often change occurs at the expense of an organization's history and culture. UNCP has bucked this trend. I have also learned that most students can achieve great successes if I take the time to reach them at their own level of academic and cultural understanding.
What do students like best about your class?
The fact that I can integrate practical real world relevance to scholarly material presented in textbooks, scholarly articles, etc. Students also like the fact that I make frequent use of my own writings and research in order to enhance traditionally assigned materials.
What makes the classroom experience at UNCP unique?
The diversity of the students would have to be number one on my list. UNCP students possess a variety of perspectives based on their varied life experiences and cultures. The sharing of these cross-cultural experiences truly enriches all, including me.
Additional Comments
I feel extremely fortunate to be a place in my life where I can say with all sincerity that my job is really a vocational calling. I now realize that I can make a greater contribution to social life by participating in the preparation of new and enriched futures through the wonderful students and faculty that I interact with on a daily basis.
