Biography
Born in Florida and raised in N.C., I grew up home schooled with my 8 siblings (I am third eldest of 9), until the age of 16 when I attended community college. I graduated high school and attended UNCP with enough credits to be a second semester sophomore. At UNCP I have been consistently on the Honors and Chancellors lists. I am also a member of the Honors College.
During my home school years, I spent my time volunteering for an equestrian center, a local art museum and 4-H, where I earned the Gold Presidential Service Award, and participating in Girl Scouts, where I earned the Girl Scout Gold Award. I had an early interest in politics, serving as a student ambassador on the Mayors’ Advisory Board.
As a teen I worked for various newspapers and magazines, including my local newspaper and Pembroke publications, such as Native Visions Magazine. I also worked for UNCP’s University Relations, and was the 2007-2008 Around the Town Editor for the UNCP Pine Needle.
I became interested in SGA when I was working on the SGA beat as a reporter for the Pine Needle. I joined in my second year (I was a junior), coming on as the Student Issues Chair. Half a semester later, I was named Vice President of the Senate, moving up to Vice President of the Student Body when the former UNCP Student Body President resigned.
I spent the summer of 2008 in D.C. at a Washington Post internship.
Why did you choose to attend UNCP?
I chose to attend UNCP partly for diversity purposes and partly because it had the joint majors and curriculum that I wished to pursue. I have a Cherokee and Mohawk heritage, and was very interested in the Native American aspect of the University. Being an International Studies major, I am also interested in the diversity aspect of the university.
What do you like best about UNCP?
While I fully support the growth and expansion of UNCP, I have enjoyed the small atmosphere. The great thing about small universities is the opportunities one can be afforded, which might not be achievable at a larger university, where opportunities would be more competitive. I owe a lot of the opportunities I have been granted to UNCP.
