The University of North Carolina at Pembroke has one of the lowest tuition rates in the UNC system. Some financial assistance is also available in the form of Graduate Assistantships and loans.
A limited number of Graduate assistantships (GA's) are awarded by the Dean of the School of Graduate Studies on a competitive basis to outstanding graduate students. GA's are typically awarded for an academic year and are renewable. Graduate Assistants are required to be enrolled as full-time graduate students. This means that the graduate assistant must be enrolled for nine (9) semester hours of graduate credit for each semester s/he holds the assistantship. Only the Graduate Dean may grant exceptions to this rule and such exceptions normally entail a reduction of the stipend.
Graduate assistants are assigned to work with senior faculty members on research projects and other professional/scholarly activities. Each graduate assistant is evaluated by his/her supervisor at the end of each semester. The stipend for a typical graduate assistant is $4000 per semester or $8000 for the academic year. The work obligation for this stipend is 20 hours/week under a supervisor assigned by the Graduate Dean. In addition to the stipend, in-state graduate assistants receive a full remission of all tuition for the duration of the assistantship. The graduate assistantships of the University do not cover University fees, nor do they cover full tuition for out-of-state students. Therefore, graduate assistants are advised that all University fees are due and payable at the start of each semester. The University does not award GAs during the Summer Sessions. To be eligible to apply for a graduate assistantship, the students must:
- be admitted to full status within her or his program of graduate study;
- be enrolled or prepared to be enrolled as a full-time graduate student taking nine semester hours/semester; and
- visit the career center website and create an account using Brave Opportunities and attach a current professional resume.
