Academic Resource Mentors

Academic Resource Mentors (ARMs) are paraprofessionals that address students' unique academic concerns to guide them in achieving academic excellence. ARMs focus on student growth and empower them to become self-directed learners that understand their academic responsibilities. Mentors are upper-class students who are successful academically, involved in campus life, and have a desire to help college students successfully manage their transition to UNCP. We serve as student advocates, guides to campus resources, and work one-on-one with students to assist in academic skills as well as basic adjustment to college and serve as a role model for academic, co-curricular and leadership behaviors.

Chao Mu

"Hello! My name is Chao Mu. I come from the People's Republic of China. This is my second year for studying at UNCP, but the second semester for graduate school. My major is Business Administration. When I came here, I know very little about American cultures, I could not speak to people in English, and I could not understand people well in English. The first year was quite a tough one for me. However, I received a lot of help and support from my friends, my professors, and the people around me. I learned a lot from them and grew up a lot. Now, as a graduate assistant/mentor in Academic Support Center, I’m very glad to share my experience to the people who are seeking for help in their academic study. I’m very glad to help and guide them to develop and achieve their goals. If you have any questions or need any advice, feel free to stop by my office, please. I’m looking forward to working with you."

Ashley PetersonHello, my name is Ashley Peterson. I am a junior majoring in Mass Communications specifically Public Relations and minoring in Marketing. I believe that every student is capable of great things and my goal is to help them achieve that!
