Academic Resource Mentors (ARMs) are paraprofessionals that address students' unique academic concerns to guide them in achieving academic excellence. ARMs focus on student growth and empower them to become self-directed learners that understand their academic responsibilities. Mentors are upper-class students who are successful academically, involved in campus life, and have a desire to help college students successfully manage their transition to UNCP. We serve as student advocates, guides to campus resources, and work one-on-one with students to assist in academic skills as well as basic adjustment to college and serve as a role model for academic, co-curricular and leadership behaviors.
Now Meet the Staff:
Hi! My name is Jocelyn Brown-Holmes and I am a senior Elementary Education major. This is my first year as a mentor and I am so excited to be able to help you develop, reach, and achieve your goals. I love assisting people while they grow into successful individuals and this is one of my goals for the semester with you!
Hello, my name is Alysia DeJesus. I am a graduate student here at UNCP and I am in the Professional School Counseling program. I have been in Pembroke for four years and I love how diverse it is. I love mentoring and meeting new people. Just come on by and say hello and always remember to “be the change you wish to see.”
Hey! My name is Sharneka Edwards. I am from Wilson, NC. This is my second year in my master’s program at UNCP for Professional School Counseling. I received my bachelor’s degree in psychology from North Carolina A&T State University. As a mentor, I am here to help my mentees excel academically and to reach their goals. I love meeting new people and being entertained. I enjoy spending time with my dog, my family, and close friends. I also enjoy reading and getting new ideas from YouTube.
Hey! My name is JP Linney. I’m a psychology major and every college student knows that motivation is key and I definitely know how to find it and bring it out. Sometimes you have to give up to go up and anyone who works with me will definitely go up. Don’t be afraid to come in and talk to me, because I know learning is a two way street.
Hi, I’m Kayla Oxendine and I am the Program Assistant for the Academic Resource Mentoring program. I have been here almost three years and I’ve loved every minute of it! I love my job because I get to help all of you get past your fears and achieve your goals. That is what truly makes my heart smile.
Hi, my name is Stephanie Parnell. I am a senior and a Middle Grades Math Education major. I enjoy helping others and I look forward to getting to know my mentees.
"Hello! My name is Chao Mu. I come from the People's Republic of China. This is my second year for studying at UNCP, but the second semester for graduate school. My major is Business Administration. When I came here, I know very little about American cultures, I could not speak to people in English, and I could not understand people well in English. The first year was quite a tough one for me. However, I received a lot of help and support from my friends, my professors, and the people around me. I learned a lot from them and grew up a lot. Now, as a graduate assistant/mentor in Academic Support Center, I’m very glad to share my experience to the people who are seeking for help in their academic study. I’m very glad to help and guide them to develop and achieve their goals. If you have any questions or need any advice, feel free to stop by my office, please. I’m looking forward to working with you."
Hello, my name is Ashley Peterson. I am a junior majoring in Mass Communications specifically Public Relations and minoring in Marketing. I enjoy attending UNCP because the professors here really do take interest in you and helping you achieve your educational goals. I believe that every student is capable of great things and my goal is to help them achieve that!
