Sara Terrell is an emerging conductor and vocal teacher specializing in choral work. She is quickly establishing herself as an artist of international reputation, having worked with choirs in the USA, the UK and Scandinavia. Music permeates Sara’s life, having grown up in a very musical home, and having been a member of a choir or two or five since the age of three.
A recent resident of the UK, Sara was the Director of Community Choirs at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff where she led several choirs of various age levels and voicings. She also worked as a music director for opera and other theatrical productions, and recently conducted the premiere of a new opera about the pioneering archaeologist Tessa Wheeler. Sara has assisted in the preparation of choirs for such conductors as Carlo Rizzi, for a performance of Britten’s War Requiem on the 100th anniversary of the WWI armistice, and Sir Simon Rattle, for performances of Elgar’s Dream of Gerontius with the BBC Proms. She has worked with and conducted leading choral groups, including Voces 8 in the UK and Voces Nordicae in Sweden.
In addition to her conducting work, Sara is also a skilled composer/arranger, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist. She most frequently writes for choirs and has had her work performed by several ensembles in the Northeast US and in Wales. Sara has taught both oboe and voice professionally and is a frequent solo performer in both areas. In her never-ending curiosity, she has also studied piano, flute, harp, guitar and saxophone, with the occasional Baroque rauschpfeife thrown in for good measure.
Sara received her Bachelor of Music in composition from the Florida State University, where she studied oboe with Eric Ohlsson and composition with John Boda and Ladislav Kubik. She recently received her Master of Music in choral conducting from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, where she studied with Neil Ferris and Sarah Tenant-Flowers. Sara has recently relocated to the Charlotte area, where she is nurturing her avid love of languages by learning Swedish while seeking out teaching and conducting opportunities.
